Subject Matter Expert (SME)

CODEUS is seeking a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Early Childhood Education to lead the development of eight professional learning modules for the Early Childhood Education Project in Africa. This is a fixed-term project-based position of 12-18 months initially, commencing upon contract signing with the Client. The SME will be responsible for the complete design, development and quality assurance of Teacher and Trainer’s learning and teaching modules that align with the national ECE curriculum, present developmentally appropriate early childhood activities, and reflect modern ECE practice. The role is remote with possible in-country travel.

Reporting and Collaboration

The SME will work closely with the Director of Education throughout the contract period. In conjunction with the Director of Education, the SME may access additional subject matter experts as needed for content areas outside their primary expertise.

Key Deliverables

The SME is accountable for delivery of the following within the contract period:

Module Development

  • Complete development of eight learning and teaching modules covering the full ECE curriculum scope
  • Each module to include: facilitator guides, session plans, participant handouts, activity resources, and assessment tools
  • Modules to be workshop-ready for delivery by national trainers

Curriculum Alignment

  • Ensure all modules align with the National Early Learning Standards (NELS) and ECE curriculum frameworks
  • Present developmentally appropriate early childhood activities grounded in the latest child development research
  • Work closely with the local team to integrate deep understanding of local customs and community contexts to ensure cultural relevance and appropriateness

Resource Development

  • Ensure all modules are fully resourced with practical, classroom-relevant materials suitable for low-resource settings
  • Develop content that reflects modern ECE practice including play-based learning, inquiry approaches, and appropriate ICT integration
  • Create observation tools, coaching prompts, and classroom micro-project templates

Quality Assurance and Internal Consistency

  • Ensure consistent structure, formatting and pedagogical approaches across all eight modules
  • Apply clear learning outcomes, logical learning sequences and coherent assessment approaches throughout
  • Refine delivery methodology for effective workshop implementation by national training teams

ICT integration is to be incorporated across all modules.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Education, Child Development, Curriculum and Instruction, or a closely related field (Master’s degree preferred, PhD will be a great value)
  • Significant experience in early childhood education, including ECE teaching and supervision and/or curriculum development
  • Demonstrated experience designing professional learning modules, curricula and classroom resources for early learning contexts
  • Proven capability in workshop writing and production of high-quality training materials (facilitator guides, session plans, participant handouts)
  • Strong research skills with ability to translate international evidence into practical training and curriculum products
  • Experience working in or designing content for African educational contexts (West Africa experience highly desirable)
  • Familiarity with international ECE curriculum frameworks

Desirable Experience

  • Prior experience developing training content for ministry of education or NGO-led teacher professional development programmes
  • Experience with play-based and inquiry-based learning methodologies
  • Understanding of low-resource classroom environments and culturally responsive pedagogy
  • Experience integrating ICT appropriately into early childhood learning contexts

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies

  • Deep knowledge of child development and learning sciences, including the role of play, relationships and language-rich interactions
  • Excellent writing skills for training and curriculum products, including clear structure, plain language and user-friendly formatting
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and meet agreed timelines while maintaining quality
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to internal consistency across multiple documents
  • Collaborative approach and responsiveness to feedback from the Director of Education
  • Strong commitment to equity, inclusion, safeguarding and culturally responsive practice

Contract Details

Contract Type: Fixed-term consultancy

Duration: 12-18 months from contract commencement with possibility of prolongation into a full-time position

Commencement: Upon signing of contract with the Client

Location: Fully remote with possible in-country travel (Africa)
